I was fresh out of a uni degree and finally earning real cash for the first time ever when I learned about "multis". My mates were making "easy cash" betting on sport, so I thought I'll have a piece of that, too.

It was the summer of 2004 and the Australian Open was on, so I thought what better time to get the winning underway. To sweeten the deal, I'd been gifted a bonus bet and used it on a tennis multi that landed 13 of the 15 legs. This got me up and about and excited at the prospect of what could come.

Determined to get a big pay day, I hit the books to put together some more bets for the following day. As back then punting was only accessible via the internet and not having it on at home (back in the caveman days), I drove into work during my holidays to put my bets on for the day.

I put 3 x $10 bets on this time.

1) 32 legs at max 201/1
2) 28 legs at max 201/1, and;
3) 16 legs at 145/1

The plan wasn't overly sophisticated - I stuck to only seeded players. My best mate threw a few on, too, and we went home to settle into the couch and watch the action.

We both got off to a good star and had checked a few wins / legs off, and by the time 6pm came around, I had gotten about half of the 32 leg multi up, and all three were still alive. Sadly for my mate, he'd already been knocked out.

Not knowing about my multi-mania until that day, I'd already booked myself in a date with a fine specimen, so at 7pm I headed out and told my mate to keep me updated on the tennis.

We went for the classic dinner and a movie back at her place, and all was going pretty well. Then a sms came through telling me I've got 24 legs up and the big multi is still alive.

My date asked why I was so up and about and I told her it was a funny text message from a mate. A little latter he rang and said I have 31 legs home with Lleyton Hewitt the final result - he was already 2 sets to 1 up.

The girl turned and asked what did he want this time?

Trying to play down my excitement and overall interest in the call, I said I'd placed a bet and needed Lleyton to win. So without hesitation, she said "Do you want to watch the rest of the game?!"

I thought it might be a little rude, as we were now 2/3 through the movie Catwoman, I said, “Oh, nah. I'm really enjoying this movie with you.”

Expecting a smile and appreciation that I was into her, she looked at me a bit puzzled. Anyway we watched the rest of the movie together but the mood had changed and things were a bit weird.

At the end, we parted ways with a kiss and that was the end of that. I had other things on my mind.

Not even 10 metres out of the drive, I called my mate and he was hooting and howling down the phone like a madman. Lleyton had gotten up. I was so pumped up I could barely drive home safely.

Because we didn't have internet, I called the betting shop when we got home and my account balance was $5,500.

I'd forgotten about the two other multis, which of course had gotten up too, so I'd hit them all.

To this day, I haven’t been able to replicate this event but it still awesome thinking about it. With regards to the girl from the date, I never saw her again!
