It’s that time of year again. It’s time for the Irish to put down their lukewarm black frothies that no one else likes. It’s time for the Poms to start shitting themselves about the upcoming Ashes series. It’s time for the Kiwis to untie their merino ewes from the fence behind the tool shed. It’s time for the German’s to unhitch the girth strappings from their lederhosen, and it’s time for the racing world to descend on Caulfield for one of the planet’s greatest 2400m handicaps – the $3m Caulfield Cup.

CAULFIELD CUP
Humidor comes into the race as favourite here. His Makybe Diva win was devastating earlier this prep, however he played up like a second-hand lawn mower in the Turnbull giving us a guide that’s about as helpful as Essendon’s Adrian Dodoro at the trade table. He’s got an ownership group that could drink for Australia so if he brings his A-game and wins, the very foundations of the Caulfield racecourse member’s pavilion will be in serious jeopardy.

Amelie's star will be out to make it a DK Weir quinella after dispatching some quality horses including reigning Melbourne Cup champ Almandin in the Group 3 Bart Cummings last start. She may be looking for a longer trip now, but you’d be madder than a hessian bag full of stray cats to leave her out.

Johannes Vermeer is the fresh horse on the scene after a blistering finish in the Caulfield Stakes on the weekend – he’ll eat 2400m and possesses the much-coveted luck of the Irish.

The Kiwi pair Jon Snow and Bonneval are also in the mix with wily trainer Murray Baker doing more damage than Wilt Chamberlain when it comes to plundering Aussie Group 1’s in recent times.

QUICK WHISPERS
Caulfield Race 9, No 10 – Ravi
Had about as much luck as Lisa Wilkinson asking for a pay rise in the How Now last start. In what is a cracking race, she’s a solid each way play.

Caulfield Race 10, No 3 – Nieta
Bit of a whisper around that this girl is flying in trackwork. With form around Everest winner Redzel earlier in the prep, the drop back to mares grade should see her in the finish.
