Brunswick Bats cricket club President John “Iron Gloves” Glover has seen many fine achievements over his 45 years involvement with the carpet side, like the time Rick “Cowboy” Collins hit one onto the petrol station roof, but nothing has been more impressive than a recent feat by the treasurer Ron Hanns.

“He’s done something no other (treasurer) has in the clubs one hundred and fifty year history… go five years without taking off with the money”

Nicknamed "Safe Hands", Hanns, a used car salesman, inherited the clubs monetary role from Ian “Sticky Fingers” Free, who had left the club “broke as a motherfu*er” after being the latest in a string of Treasurers to cook the books, and Glover admitted “expectations were low”.

“He wasn’t the ideal candidate, but we thought if we could get through one year without him pocketing the players subs we’d be happy”.

Well one year turned into two, and three, and then all of a sudden he’d done five clean years, with the man himself admitting he was “proud” of the achievement.

“To be honest, I expected to roll them” laughed Hanns.

“I was recently divorced and thought it would be the perfect way to get some extra cash, but they watched me pretty closely early on and then I just got on a bit of a run”.

It’s been a great twelve months for the fledgling side, with fourths wicketkeeper Brett “Boonie” Barnes also making history on a recent pre season camp, downing sixteen cans on the ride bus to Torquay.

“We thought that was huge” said Glover, but “now there’s competition for our best clubman trophy this year” added the proud President.
